A life-long East Coast resident, Matthew Frederick has always been attuned to the beauty of a well-appointed home, and the pleasure that comes along with being comfortable in such a space. This “Elegant Living for Everyday Life” has been his hallmark ever since he launched his eponymous firm in 2001, and it continues to be his ethos in all of his interiors work, whether a farm renovation in Pennsylvania‘s Bucks Country or a high-rise penthouse in St. Petersburg, Russia. Based in bucolic Gladstone, NJ, he’s nestled in between New York and Philadelphia, and within a short drive to Connecticut and the Hamptons. He’s often at work on projects throughout the tri-state area as well as abroad.
Aesthetics drive him, but Matthew gives each of his residential interior design projects full, personal attention only possible in a mid-sized firm. Looks don’t count for much if the quality isn’t there. As Frederick says, “I create products and interiors that are as elegant as they are useful when put to the test of everyday life.”
Frederick’s emphasis on quality extends through every detail of a project, from the initial design to the execution, and is reflected in the M. Frederick store and eponymous product assortment. A master curator, Frederick thoughtfully composes a unique home true to its owners. Layering art, integrating collections, and above all editing and mixing ingredients like heirlooms, books and personal touches, his concepts make for a comfortable haven whether the aesthetic is modern or traditional.
A key part of Matthew Frederick’s designs has always been creating bespoke furnishings to meet the needs of his discerning clients. Each piece is handmade to a client’s exact proportions and desired finishes—whether the fill of a sofa or the angle of chair leg—and completed with their own fabric selections, whether a cotton print, silk mohair or soft linen. Based on the success of these high-quality, timeless designs M. Frederick launched a line of occasional furniture and decorative accessories for Chelsea House, as well as a line of carpets and rugs for Silk Road Carpet & Rugs. Frederick also manufactures his own casegood items and select decorative accessoires, wall covering, and fabrics available exclusively thorugh his M. Frederick design studio and website.
